Read this very brief article in the China Daily Chinas official English language newspaper. Its the testimony of a university student who converted to Christianity. Now if youve been following China for any length of time you might be picking your jaw up off the floor. Get this: The official and highly controlled newspaper of the Communist government is featuring a story of a religious conversion of an exceptionally bright university student who found meaninglessness in existence apart from God. He was given a Bible by a colleague, and the reader is not led to believe this is a bad thing. He converted to Christ after reading it and now is experiencing fulfillment. And hes now happily attending an unregistered church i.e house church. Whoa.

John Piper writes about why he is now using Twitter:

Now what about Twitter? I find Twitter to be a kind of taunt: “Okay, truth-lover, see what you can do with 140 characters! You say your mission is to spread a passion for the supremacy of God in all things! Well, this is one of those ‘all things.’ Can you magnify Christ with this thimble-full of letters?”

To which I respond:

The sovereign Lord of the earth and sky

Puts camels through a needle’s eye.

And if his wisdom see it mete,

He will put worlds inside a tweet.

So I am not inclined to tweet that at 10AM the cat pulled the curtains down. But it might remind me that the Lion of Judah will roll up the heavens like a garment, and blow out the sun like a candle, because he just turned the light on. That tweet might distract someone from pornography and make them look up.

I’ve been tweeting anonymously for a month mainly to test its spiritual and family effects on me. In spite of all the dangers, it seems like a risk worth taking. “All things were created through Christ and for Christ” (Colossians 1:16). The world does not know it, but that is why Twitter exists and that’s why I Tweet.

Finally Alive is a newly published book written by John Piper. Pastor John is the preaching pastor of the church that my family attends in the Minneapolis area. Finally Alive is focused on the Gospel and its message both to the believer and the unbeliever. John unpacks the truths he previously delivered in a sermon series he previously preached at Bethlehem Baptist Church. He shares an extended explanation of the term “born again”. From the Desiring God Web site:

Spiritual rebirth is precious and crucial. When Jesus said, “You must be born again,” he wasn’t simply sharing interesting information; he was directing us toward eternal life.
It is essential to know what God intends when he uses this language of being born again, so that we may experience new birth and help others do the same.

I really appreciated the final chapter in which he brings the work of the Gospel home to the individual believer’s responsibility to share it. He explains that the effort, not the eloquence is the work of the Holy Spirit through the willing believer impressed with the need to share the Gospel with others. I recommend this book as an insight into the work of the Gospel message both as it is shared and experienced.

Desiring God blog reposted this entry from last year. It was written by Jon Bloom and gives great perspective on post-Christmas emotions.

Each year Christmas night finds members of my family feeling some melancholy. After weeks of anticipation, the Christmas celebrations have flashed by us and are suddenly gone. And we’re left standing, watching the Christmas taillights and music fade into the night.

But it’s possible that this moment of melancholy may be the best teaching moment of the whole season. Because as long as the beautiful gifts remain unopened around the tree and the events are still ahead of us, they can appear to be the hope we are waiting for. But when the tree is empty and events are past, we realize we are longing for a lasting hope.
