I have been trying out several posting services lately with the purpose of easily moving video from my iPhone to several locations on the web. I have tried using Qik, which I like and which also now allows me to post video from the iPhone while connected with 3G service. I also use Posterous, a simple blogging, aggregating service (there may be better ways to describe Posterous), to post videos, audio clips, and photos. I really like Posterous because you can set it up to auto-post to other social web sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo, etc. Posterous recently released an iPhone application which allows you to post photos and videos to your Posterous account which in turn will post them to any social networking sites that you setup in your profile. This morning I posted some video I took recently with my iPhone using the application, Pic Posterous. It worked great, even when only connected via 3G. The one issue I had was that my video was posted to Posterous, Twitter, Facebook, and my blog here at quawkle.com. Those were all by design as I setup my Posterous account to auto post to each of them. The problem was that I had my blog setup to send notification of new posts to Twitter and then to Facebook via Twitter’s Selective Twitter application. So the net result was duplicate postings at both Twitter and Facebook. After a little research thanks to help by Len at LenFlack.com, I discovered that Twitter Tools, the Wordpress plugin that I use to auto sent notification to Twitter and then to Facebook, had just released version 2.0 of the Wordpress plugin which has several new add-on plugin features. One is the addition of adding your own custom hashtags automatically and the other is a setting that allows you to automatically exclude posts from being sent to Twitter (and thereby Facebook) by categories selected. Since my auto posts from Posterous come over with the General category selected by default, I chose that category to be excluded and that solved my duplication issue, viola!

Facebook will be releasing version 3.0 of their iPhone application soon so I am excited to see what video posting features that app will have.

I found an excellent blog post that was identical to my situation with regard to using Selective Twitter application for selectively choosing which tweets are sent to Facebook. As I posted earlier, I had issues with not being able to send blog post notifications to Facebook after making the change. I tried a number of new plugins and nothing seemed to work quite right. The following post nailed the solution for me – not quite perfect but as close as I could hope to get. Thanks Len Flack!

A month or two back, I changed how Facebook imports my tweets. I tweet quite often, so I didn’t want it to automatically use every tweet as a status update. To solve this, I began using Selective Twitter Status. This allows me to manually choose which tweets are posted to Facebook by appending the hashtag “#fb” to the tweets I’d like posted.

This inadvertently caused the tweets that were automatically generated by my blog posts to cease being sent to Facebook. Doh I usually generate a fair amount of traffic from my Facebook friends seeing a blog post in my status updates, so this morning I decided I wanted to fix this somehow. Here is the really simple solution I came up with, using Twitter Tools 1.6:

See my previous post regarding Publish to Facebook plugin – incidently which did not work at all – probably too old a version that hasn’t been updated for use with Wordpress 2.7x and later.

I have been using my favorite Twitter client Tweetie on both my Mac and iPhone. I really enjoy using this client even though there are many good choices for both the iPhone and the Mac (and my Windows PC). Tweetie is just simple to use, clean interface, and doesn’t get in the way of the experience. But alas, I digress. I was reading through the entries in Tweetie when I saw a tweet by Dave Hamilton of the MacObserver fame. I noticed again that he was using the Twitter hashtag #fb at the end of the tweet. I saw several tweets in the past where he did the same thing and even though Facebook came to mind, I wasn’t sure why he used them. I did a search on #fb in Tweetie and noticed that many other folks also used the hashtag and then it dawn on me that maybe it was a method of interposting between Twitter and Facebook. I used the Twitter application on Facebook that will pull in all of my tweets as Facebook status updates. I have often lamented that while I like to cross post between Twitter and Facebook, not everything I post on Twitter makes sense to those reading my Facebook entries. It would be nice to find an easy way to selectively choose which tweets I made would post on Facebook and do it “on the fly.” That is when I learned about the Facebook application, Selective Twitter. By install the application (and unistalling the Facebook Twitter application), I am now able to send selective tweets to my Facebook status by simply appending #fb at the end of my tweets. Sure I lose 4 characters, but the tradeoff is worth it.

This created a new issue however. My Quawkle blog posts are automatically sent to Twitter as a link post and previously with the Twitter app in Facebook, those blog notifications would automatically appear on my Facebook status updates. By switching to Selective Twitter, the only way to maintain Quawkle posts ending up in Facebook was to either appending my post titles with #fb (not a clean choice) or by searching for a new Wordpress plugin that would automatically publish notification of my blog posts to Facebook. For this purpose, I just installed Publish to Facebook, a Wordpress plugin for just that purpose. In fact this post will be the maiden voyage using the newly installed Wordpress plugin. Hopefully you will see this on my Facebook status if you are a Facebook friend. Fingers crossed!

In trying to figure out a WordPress 2.7 Press This error I was getting when selecting text prior to using the 2.7 bookmarklet, I kept getting an error. A little web surfing via Google found this helpful forum post…

When trying to use the pressthis tool I get the error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: htmlspecialchars_decode in /home/content/r/o/b/robertbasil/html/wp-admin/press-this.php on line 554

Line 554:

I’m using php4, I thought this was a php5 error?

The original poster then provided this bug-fix tip to resolve the problem…

I figured out a quick fix.

Since htmlspecialchars_decode only works with php 5.10 and above I just removed that part of the code.

In the press-this.php file on line 554 change this:

<?php if ($selection) echo wp_richedit_pre(htmlspecialchars_decode($selection)); ?>

To this:

<?php if ($selection) echo wp_richedit_pre($selection); ?>

Now it works just fine.

The code really should do a check to see if php 5.1 is installed before calling the htmlspecialchars_decode function.

I tested it and it seems to be working for me now.

A great starter manual for the new WordPress blogger.

When I made a decision last year to get serious about blogging, I had to make two first-step decisions:

1) What platform was I going to use?
and
2) What training tool would I enlist to make me more effective with decision #1?

When I did a book search for WordPress, there didn’t seem to be a lot of options. The first one to catch my eye was Lisa Sabin-Wilson’s WordPress For Dummies. I have purchased and read several of the “DUMMIES” books in the past; some were good and some lacked substance. To my delight, Lisa’s book falls into the former group. First of all, the author is an expert about WordPress. She know what she is writing about and she doesn’t write in an tech-elitist style. She makes the material easy to understand without dumbing down the material as some of the “DUMMIES” series of books tend to do. She also offers “must know” material as well as ideas to stretch your blog beyond the basics.

The best recommendation that I can offer for this book is that I plan to spend my money to buy the second edition – available soon!
