Another Sunday, another workday. There’s a certain point where I pack myself a digital lunch bag and relocate to someplace very public to continue my work. Nearby, I have The Bagel Place With The Free WiFi. A wheat bagel and a can of soda buys me at least four hours of guilt-free office work.The BPwtFW closes at 6. If I’m not done working but not ready to go home yet, I’ll move on to the Panera Bread up the street. Their prices are fairly atrocious, but I make it all back on the free soda refills.At the moment, I’m set up at the Chipotle way up the street. The staff is friendly. The food is cheap, healthy, and tasty. The soda spills carelessly from an ever-replenishing font, just like Wonka’s chocolate waterfall.I limit myself to iPad work here, though. Setting up a virtual cubicle in a joint with just enough tables to handle normal eat-and-go traffic seems like a showboaty and ungrateful gesture, even if you do bring your own WiFi with you.

An Open Letter From Your Dad

Wow! The years have flown by and now you, my oldest son, have reached another milestone. One of many future milestones you will achieve, ‘Lord willing’ and another milestone I am also passing, ‘Lord merciful and gracious’. I likely will pass this place again if the Lord is willing and my younger children are able, but somehow the first time quickens my senses in a unique fashion! My son, the man, has already proven himself time over and this college graduation is yet another evidence of the grace of God both in your life and in mine.

Zack, I am extremely proud of you – not only for achieving this high mark of completing your undergraduate degree – but even more so for setting goals and achieving them and for having the wisdom to recognize the hands of your heavenly Father Who deems you worth His greatest sacrifice and His ongoing work in you. He who loves you with a far greater love than even mine; He will sustain you as you take the next steps in your incredible life.

I know it is a bit early, but I cannot contain my pride and excitement in your great accomplishment. Mom and I love you very much and we are proud of you!

I was excited to get our Roku box and set it up. It took only a matter of minutes and the quality is outstanding. With the choices of MediaFly, Netflix, Amazon, MLB and hopefully many more in the coming future, I never run out of content I enjoy watching. Keep up the good work Roku and I plan to add another box when we replace our main TV in a month or so!

Marketing 101

I am trying to step up my marketing efforts for my business this week. Marketing is not my strongest skill. I am a technical guy and although I have worked as a consultant for over 15 years I don’t find myself comfortable with selling my skills. This is not new to me, however, since most of my work for the last 12 years has been a direct result of interfacing with my customers and selling my skills and my company’s services. Now however, doing it completely on my own and working through a succinct and well-defined definition of what my company has to offer is a personal challenge for me – but one I am excited to pursue.

I have had to work through the anticipation of dealing with “no” and the series of failures that people in business must face. When you have an established company standing behind you it seems easier to take the calculated risks knowing that you have resources to cover you. Now in the position of a small business with no one to blame but yourself feels (and most likely is) more intimidating.

For today, the motto is “press on”. Sounds a bit pithy but fits well nonetheless.
